In another historic moment in Philippine sports, world class Filipino-American boxers Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Villoria and Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr prove they are World Champions to reckon with.

Villoria started celebrations with a hard fought victory punctuated by an 11th round KO to snatch the IBF Light Flyweight belt of Ulisis Solis. Both warriors went at it for 11 long rounds, with Villoria fulfilling his promise of coming with all that he’s got and never slacked off. Solis meanwhile proved he could take a punch and throw solid punches himself. Both fighters had their low moments, literaly with internationl referee Bruce McTavish deducting points for low blows. But it was the stellar wind up and knockout punch of Villoria that knocked Solis crashing to the canvas. McTavish gave him the count and Solis could just not get up. In fact it took him a few more minutes to get up and congratulate th new champion.

In the main event, Nonito Donaire lived up to his billing of being the “The Filipino Flash” as he did not wait long to show his speed and power against the unbeaten Raul Martinez. Donaire knocked down Martinez solid twice in the 1st round. The champion eventually finished off the unbeaten challenger with a left upper cut that sent Mexican-American sprawaling to the canvas and the ref immediately stoppe the fight in the 4th round.

The wins of Villoria and Donaire now go down in history as one of the biggest professional boxing matches at teh famed Araneta Colesium that gained international fame when it hosted the original Thrilla In Manila between Muhamad Ali and Joe Frazier almost 34 years ago.
