CAGAYAN de Oro City – Brothers Rafael and Roberto Miguel Jalnaiz led
another forceful march of the Misamis Oriental boxers who conquered
the second day of the semifinal round of the 2011 PLDT-ABAP National
Amateur Boxing Championships at the Misamis Oriental Provincial
Capitol Garden here.
MisOr sent five of its seven fighters into the gold medal round that
increased the number of its boxers going for a golden finish to 12.
The 12 year old Rafael retired Jay-Ar Duga-Duga of Aglayan,
Malaybalay, Bukidnon at the start of the third round to advance in the
finals of the Kids Division’s powder-weight class, while the 13-year
old Robert Miguel scored a referee stop contest (RSC) win in the
second round over Jaye Arce Arcilla of Mandaluyong City in the School
Boy’s mosquito weight match.
Rafael and Robert Miguel are sons of two-time Olympian Roberto “Bobby”
Jalnaiz, now the head coach of the Misamis Oriental Amateur boxing
program.
Joining the Jalnaizes were Carlo Paalam in the Kids cotton-weight
category, Harmonito de la Torre in the Jr. Boys featherweight division
and Jean Vee Flores in the Youth Girls bantamweight class.
Casualities from the MisOr side were brothers Klemen Earl and Maurico
Cabanit. Klemen. Earl lost to Eumir Marcial of Zamboanga City I the
Jr. Boys light flyweight match via a hairline 5-4 decision and Maurico
bowed to Wenie Clide Verano of Valencia-Bukidnon 11-5 in the Youth
light-flyweight category.
Also displaying enough power were Tagbilaran City boxers, urged on by
delegation head and ABAP-7 regional director Nemesio Monton.
Danrik Sumabong defeated Fedinan Apat of Davao del Norte in the Kid’s
ant weight category and Jeno Cabugngan marched to the finals after
beating Cebu City bet Raymond Empec via 9-5 decision in the Youth Boys
bantamweight division.
Two more Aglayan, Malaybalay City fighters made it to the gold medal
round – Jason Neri, who defeated Jordan Catubay of Cebu City via 11-3
decision in the Youth Boys light flyweight class, and Mario Fernandez,
who scored a walk-over win against John Rey Melligen of Bacolod City
in the Youth Boys bantamweight semis.
