JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR WINS IN BLOODY BRAWL

Posted on 29 March 2009

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr engaged Argentina ’s Luciano Cuello in a bloody brawl to eventually pull off a well-deserved ten round decision in a junior middleweight bout telecast Sunday in Manila by Solar Sports from Tijuana , Mexico .

All three judges scored the fight for Chavez – 98-92, 96-94 and 96-95.

In a post fight interview Chavez said “This was a good fight for me. I learned a lot over 10 rounds. It was probably one of my best fights.”

Cuello (23-1, nine knockouts) had fought only once out of Argentina and nobody knew too much about him. However, boxing writer Mile Rosenthal said Cuello “ made it clear from the beginning that he was competent and determined. He had a good jab, which he used to get inside, and had quicker hands than the much-taller Chavez (39-0-1, 29 KOs ).”

But Chavez Jr., fighting in front of his countrymen who cheered him wildly pounded Cuello to the body from beginning to end and probably outworked the Spain-based Argentine for most of the entertaining fight.

Cuello probably suffered a broken nose which bled profusely for most of the fight which was an action-packed, slam-bang affair. Chavez himself was cut above the right eye in the sixth round, although it was never a factor in the fight.

“It was the first time I’ve been cut,” Chavez said. “I learned from that too.”

Chavez wants to take a step up in competition and although promoter Bob Arum mentioned a possible year end fight against the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Manny Pacquiao, most fight fans felt it was not likely to happen because of the big difference in weight.
