SONSONA LOOKING GOOD

Posted on 27 October 2009

WBO super flyweight champion “Marvelous” Marvin Sonsona is looking good according to elite trainer Nonito D onaire Sr who is working with longtime trainer Jun Agrabio in preparing the 19 year old southpaw for his first title defense at Casino Rama in Ontario, Canada on November 21..

Donaire Sr. said Sonsona who is currently training in Mandaue City, Cebu has been sparring four to six rounds on some days and works on the punch-mitts.

The trainer indicated that he doesn’t want Sonsona to spar with heavier opponents and instead has him going up against the likes of Richard Bitos who is regarded as quick both with his hands and in his movement.

Flyweight contender Fernando Lumacad who reported at the Sonsona training camp in the hope of sparring with Sonsona cannot work out according to Donaire Sr, because he has a sprained hand.

Sonsona who won the title with an impressive twelve round decision over veteran Jose “Carita” Lopez of Puerto Rico last September 4 is scheduled to defend his title against Mexico’s 23 year Alejandro “Payasito” Hernandez who has a record of 22-7 with 11 knockouts. Hernandez is coming off a unanimous decision twelve round loss to Wilbert Uicab in a battle for the Mexican and North American Boxing Federation flyweight titles last September 11.

Prior to the Uicab fight respected Fight Writer Graham Houston said Hernandez is “an entertaining fighter to watch. A switch-hitter who has good boxing skills but is willing to go toe-to-toe.”

Casino Rama is the same venue where Sonsona won the title before a large crowd of Filipino supporters.

Donaire Sr said they would leave for Ontario on November 13 and expects to be in great shape at fight time. He revealed that the hard-hitting and lanky southpaw currently weighs 130 pounds but should have no problem making the 115 pound limit at the official weigh-in.

Since he is clearly a growing young man Donaire Sr said he expects Sonsona to have a couple of fights more as a super flyweight before moving up to fight as a bantamweight at 118 pounds.
