Challenger Joshua Clottey’s trainer Lenny De Jesus isn’t fazed by the stature of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao, Freddie Roach’s three “Trainer of the Year” accolades and even the thousands who have shown their support and admiration for Pacquiao.

De Jesis himself told us recently he would have loved to be working with Pacquiao. Their relationship ended after the first Erik Morales fight when Shelly Finkel took over as manager and after de Jesus worked  six fights in Pacquiao’s corner

He said that while Pacquiao is a much more refined and cautious fighter that he was in the past he expects Clottey to put pressure on him, unsettle the Filipino and push him backward  because that will make Pacquiao “go back to his old style where if he gets hurt or gets hit hard” he will come back swinging recklessly.

De Jesus believes the key to beating Pacquiao is to put a lot of pressure on him and throw punches” pointing out that Clottey is tough and can take a good shot and defends well.

De Jesus pointed out that this fight is not one of those catch-weight fights like Manny had against Miguel Cotto or even De La Hoya who came down in weight to fight Pacquiao and that makes a difference.

Clottey himself pointed out at the final pre-fight press conference that he is “really a  true welterweight. Big for that matter. He (Pacquiao) is a smaller guy and can throw a lot of punches.” But the former world champion pointed out “ I connect punches and ‘ll make sure that if I throw a few, it’s going to connect, and I’m going  to cause damage. I believe in that”

Clottey added  “If he’s going to throw a thousand punches, then I’ll block a thousand punches. And that will get him thinking. I’m not going to back up. And the fear and the pressure will make him think more. I’m not going to go backward. I’m going to stay in there. Wherever he goes, I’ll cut off the ring. I’ll make him fight. I want him to fight for the first time.”

Team Pacquiao is confident that no matter what Clottey does, including the use of roughhousing tactics, Manny will be equal to the task. The word is that Pacquiao himself has told close associates that he plans to go after Clottey from the opening bell and hopes to take him within the first few rounds if he gets the chance although Roach has predicted a knockout within rounds seven to nine.

The Pacquiao-Clottey fight card will be carried on a “live” basis on a number of pay-per-view outlets and on television by Solar Sports including the “Mecca of Philippine sports and entertainment – the Araneta Coliseum where huge, four-sided screens provide the ambiance of almost being at ringside in Dallas.

The fights will also be carried in all Robinson, SM and Rockwell Cinemas and numerous other venues, restaurants, bars and clubs around the country. Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim will also provide “live” telecasts in venues in each of the congressional districts in Manila, free to the public.
