Notable personalities in media and business played an enjoyable round of golf for a worthy cause in the recently concluded Postmaster General’s Cup golf tournament at the historic Intramuros Golf Course for the benefit of the Philippine Postal Museum project of the Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost).
Sportsman/businessman Bert Lina of Air 21/Burger King, Sports Editors’ Lito Tacujan of the Philippine Star, Teddyvic Melendres of Philippine Daily Inquirer, Ding Marcelo of Manila Bulletin, Columnist Rey Bancod of Tempo, Star Columnist Alex Magno, Construction magnate F.F. Cruz, Sr., former National Security Adviser General Alexander Aguirre and Postmaster General Hector R.R. Villanueva led a total of 60 participants in the event which is aimed to raise funds for the construction and operations of the Philippine Postal Museum. The amount raised in the tournament will form part of the seed money of the Postal Museum Foundation which will manage the project.
Emil Loyola posted a score of 63 and Butch Bakunawa fired-off with a 68 to eventually rule the tournament backed by Philippine Tourism Authority, Pagcor, Social Security System, Postal Bank, Club Car, PCSO, My Phone, Philippine Reclamation Authority, Philip’s Technical Consultants, Amstar, Land Bank, Transpac, Rudy Project and San Miguel Corporation. Hole sponsors are Twenty Plus Inc., Engr. Claro Maranan and Messaging Solutions Provider.
Ray Aranda of Pagcor was declared champion in Class A, Frederick Francisco in Class B, Tony Paraza won in Class C division and Ms. Karen Kime ruled the women’s division scoring a breakthrough win against Korean Song Sun Hee with a 70.
Postmaster General and CEO Hector Villanueva said they were very thankful for the support the event received from sponsors and participants. Villanueva said “ More than their interest in the sport of golf, all of them are enthusiastic at the prospect of a Postal Museum being established to preserve and display historical, cultural and heritage artifacts that otherwise would be lost forever.”
The Post Office Building has already been declared a Heritage Site by the National Historical Institute. The proposed Museum will be located in the West Wing of the iconic building which was built in 1906, bombed out during World War II, and completely restored in 1946.
The Philippine Postal Museum will house the many historical and cultural artifacts and relics which are now scattered in the various Postal locations all over the country.
The awarding of trophies for winners immediately followed and several raffle prizes were drawn winding up an enjoyable day.
