ST. BENILDE IN TWIN NCAA FOOTBALL VICTORIES

College of St. Benilde pulled off  twin victories when it swept the senior and junior divisions of the 85th NCAA football competition at the football field of the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Blazers pulled off the biggest surprise of the tournament when they scored a stunning 1-0 victory over the powerhouse San Beda Red Lions, the champions in the past eight seasons, to snatch the seniors crown.

The Taft-based booters  finished with an 8-1-1 (win-loss-draw) record as it foiled San Beda’s effort to win nine straight soccer  titles in the NCAA.

CSB made it a double celebration after its high school squad dealt San Beda scored an ever more impressive 3-0 win in the junior division foiling the San Beda challenge for the second time.

It was the Junior Blazers’ 11th straight win to top the event organized by a league committee chaired by Mike del Mundo of Perpetual Help.

Football, the most popular sport in the world but relegated to the background in basketball-crazy Philippines is the second to the last event in the NCAA calendar for the 2009-2010 season.

The NCAA is the oldest and one of the most prestigious collegiate  leagues in th country and i, headed this year by president Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB., and Management Committee chair Jose Mari Lacson.

The NCAA season is expected to end on a high note with the staging of the blue ribbon track and field competition on March 1 at the Rizal Memorial track and field stadium.
