San Sebastian coach Roger Gorayeb watched as UST pounced on an error-prone and sometimes lethargic FEU squad to win their sudden-death showdown at The Arena in San Juan to set-up a best-of-three championship battle with the Lady Stags beginning on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
FEU which was hardly ever a threat to UST after pushing the Lady Tigresses to a deciding third game will face Adamson in an evenly-matched clash for third place beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Gorayeb said he was “preparing to win and will not be taking any chances” adding that “we have to win on our own not because of the weakness of UST but because we’ll rely on the strength of our team.”
Analyzing the performance of FEU which fought back last Sunday to tie their semi-final series with UST at one game apiece, Gorayeb said “there were times today when FEU committed so many errors that in the end it took its toll on them.” The SSC coach told us he plans “to minimize these kind of errors.”
For SSC to win Gorayeb believes the players have “to stay focused and concentrate on the game” and play to his strengths which is “a combination attack. We will not rely on the individual skills of our players especially with (Jaroensri) Bualee who is already a marked player.”
He revealed that to effectively protect Thai import Bualee he made some adjustments on the offense because he credited UST for their good defense aimed at thwarting Bualee.
Gorayeb said his objective is “to spike as long as we can so that they (UST) will lose the chance of receiving the ball easily and if that happens we will always go to the open spikers.”
The height of the UST players boosts the team’s ability to block although their floor defense is not so much but “once the ball passes the block that’s the time they commit errors.”
Gorayeb has some real talent in his line-up aside from Bualee with the duo of Latigay and Devanadera as well as Susan Roces whom he described as “a very smart player who always looks at the blocker, she knows when to control her spoke and overall plays a controlled game.”
The SSC coach doesn’t hide the fact that he wants to win and win by sweeping the first two games because he wants the team to rest before the NCAA. He said “physically we can handle it but psychologically it will be difficult if it goes to a third game.”
