Games Thursday
(Blue Eagle gym)
2 p.m. – Adamson vs UP
4 p.m. – UST vs Lyceum
University of Santo Tomas fought back from a first-set setback and overcame a tough Far Eastern U side as it carved out a hard-earned 17-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-17 victory for its second straight victory and the solo lead in Shakey’s V-League Season 6 at The Arena in San Juan late Tuesday night.
The Tigresses, also dragged to a four-setter by another title contender Adamson Lady Falcons in the second conference’s opener last Sunday, leaned on the superb all-around performance of skipper Aiza Maizo and support from Angeli Tabaquero, Roxanne Pimentel and Maruja Banaticla to turn back the Lady Tams.
Maizo battered FEU’s net defense with 19 attacks while holding her own on the other side with seven blocks as she finished the 1:41-hour encounter with 26 points. Tabaquero, slowly settling down with her game after a long layoff, added 12 points while Pimentel and Banaticla had 10 points each.
The Lady Tams, who trounced the UP Lady Maroons, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16, also last Sunday, appeared headed for a big upset as they surprised the Tigresses with a solid first-set performance behind Cherry Vivas, Shaira Gonzalez and Rachel Ann Daquis.
But they failed to hang on in a tight, extended second set duel and dropped another heartbreaker of a set in the third before fading out in fourth to slid to 1-1 record in the early going of the tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.
Vivas had a 20-point performance she spiked with 16 kills, Gonzalez knocked down 15 attacks and wound up with 19 points while Daquis contributed 15, including three service points.
Despite a 2-0 start, UST coach Cesael delos Santos said the Tigresses, who beat the San Sebastian Lady Stags to bag the first conference crown last June, remain far from their top form.
The Espana-based squad tries to make it three-in-row as it plays Lyceum at the Blue Eagle gym tomorrow at resumption of the tournament organized by Sports Vision and backed by Accel, Mikasa, Mighty Bond and OraCare.
Meanwhile, the Ateneo-UP match last Tuesday will be shown starting at 2 p.m. today on NNB-4 while the UST-FEU game will be aired Friday. Games can be viewed live on webcast at
www.v-league.ph The matches are also replayed on Viva Prime over Destiny Cable.
Ateneo shrugged off a shaky start to complete a straight-set win over University of the Phils., 25-23, 25-13, 25-13, in the other game.
Charo Soriano, the team’s former star now playing as a guest player, delivered 13 hits while three others churned out double-digit scores to underscore the Lady Eagles’ domination of the Lady Maroons.
Denise Acevedo had 12, while Angeline Gervacio and Fille Cainglet added 11 points apiece as Ateneo served notice of its bid after missing the quarterfinals in the first conference.
UP, led by Carmela Lopez and Merichelle Tagudin’s seven-hit outputs, fell to its second straight defeat.
